Not really a tale, but it seems the catalog number for A.W. Faber’s Columbus pencil wasn’t always 1492:

    Perhaps this would be a good game show question: Name a pencil whose theme is based on a single person.

    Blaisdell’s Ben Franklin, EF’s Van Dyke…
