Antecedent/Consequent—Extension

This is an orchestral reduction on two staves of mm. 102-119 from the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (click for larger version). Though this isn’t a voice-leading analysis, seeing the elements of orchestration in this compacted view is revealing in its own right.

After the 8-bar parallel period, Beethoven’s characteristic motivic intensity is apparent as the motive from m. 102 is explored then expanded from m. 110 onward; even visually the sense of building rhythmic momentum is unmistakable.
